Now in its in its 34th year, the Independence Cycling Tour is taking place right now here in the Dominican Republic.
The Vuelta Ciclista Independencia takes the leading cycling teams all around the country. Yesterday, the cyclists were in Las Terrenas, Samana, which is a region known for its hills, lovely landscape and beaches. This was the second phase of the tour, and was a grueling 154km long course. News reports had Augusto Sanchez taking first place, with a time of 3:37.44. Second place went to Bruno Langlois of Garneau Quebecor, who now leads the overall race with an accumulated time of 6:43:51. The tour is now in its third phase, with the cyclists heading to the north-central region, traveling from the Samana seafront boulevard, to Villa Rivas, Castillo, San Francisco de Macoris, Tenares and ending at the central park of Salcedo, covering a total of 146km. The Canadian team of Garneau Quebecor are the overall leaders.
